The Challenge of Long Names and Titles on Address Labels

The Problem: You have a guest with a hyphenated surname or a beautifully long compound name (e.g., Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan-Christopher Huffington-Smythe). You try to type it into your label template, but it’s too wide. It runs off the edge or the font becomes unreadably small.

The Common Mistake: Your instinct might be to put "Mr. and Mrs." on the top line and the name on the bottom. Don’t do this! according to strict etiquette, a courtesy title (like Mr. or Mrs.) should never be separated from the name it belongs to. It acts like a prefix and must stay "glued" to the first name.

The Elegant Solution: The "Double List" The correct way to handle a name that is too wide is to stop treating the couple as one unit and list them as two individuals.

Instead of trying to squeeze them onto one line or separating the titles, give each person their own line. This reduces the character count per line and actually looks more formal.

How to format it:

  • Line 1: Mr. Jonathan-Christopher Huffington-Smythe
  • Line 2: Mrs. Jane Huffington-Smythe

Why this works for your stationery?

  1. Etiquette Safe: You aren't stranding any titles.
  2. Better Legibility: You can keep the font size readable.
  3. Luxurious Look: When using our Premium Foil labels, having two lines of text fills the vertical space of the sticker beautifully. High-quality transparent matte vinyl allows your envelope color to show through while providing a sophisticated, non-glare finish.
